Here is what a young person said prior to joining our social prescribing scheme:

Very hopeless, like I didn't know what to do... I felt like there was something wrong and I needed someone to talk to. I had a lot of strong bad emotions.... I don't have any family members I can talk to, so I felt I needed to find something for me"

This is how a young person described how they felt in anticipation of their social prescribing meeting:

I felt nervous because I thought this is a new person I've never talked to. I was scared... but when I first came here, I found out that Helen was really nice and I was really relieved.

This young person describes their relationship with their social prescriber:

It was very good. I felt like I could talk to her more about things than anyone else. The way she talks is really calm. Coming here I actually got listened to. No-one would get angry with me. I could say anything and nothing would happen. I felt really comfortable.

These quotes describe what Social Prescribing at Bromley Y achieved:

Before I came to Bromley Y, I had nothing for myself.

Now I am doing things I want to be doing. It has helped me move on and be happy with how I am living.

I am a lot more positive and have learnt to move on from things that made me feel low. Now I am optimistic for the future and can let life take me where it is supposed to take me rather than worrying about it.

Helen would always say don’t worry what is all the way over there you can’t control it, just worry about now and that’s what I am doing.

I have started college. I used to hate waking up in the morning but now I have a job which is what I really wanted. I have got more things to do and focus on instead of thinking ‘oh everything’s awful’. I have got things to put my energy into.

I used to be very indecisive but having Helen there to listen to me helped me make decisions. It wasn’t that she told me what to do, but she guided me to help me make my own choices.

I am more hopeful, happier and not as worried. I feel like I can relax and enjoy things and not live for the sake of living. When I left there I was on my own but I have had all the help that is needed … I can go out into the world on my own and it’s all good!

Our NEW social prescribing service is one of the first in Bromley for young people. We help thousands of young people each year and hundreds of thousands since we started in 1965. We also offer services within the community and schools to ensure accessibility.
